Dunvegan Castle & Garden
Dunvegan Castle is on the north west side of the Isle of Skye. We stopped here between our visits to Neist Point & Talisker Distillery. They’re only open for visitors from April through mid-October, which is unfortunate because I’m sure this castle is gorgeous & magical with a little snow in the wintertime. They do have some super adorable self-catering cottages that are available for rent year-round though.
The castle was originally built in the 13th century and was built up on a rock above Loch Dunvegan.
Views of the castle from the gardens and along the lake are breathtaking.
It is the only Highland castle that has been occupied by the same family, Clan MacLeod, for the past 800 years. The estate has been used in several movies including Highlander, Made of Honor, 47 Ronin, and Macbeth.
There is a large parking lot across the street from the castle with a nice cafe called MacLeod Tables Cafe. It’s self-service offering homemade soup, salads, pasta, quiche, sausage rolls, baked potatoes, toasties, homemade scones, cakes, and coffee. It’s a great spot for a nice, quick lunch or snack. There is also an ice cream trike that has homemade ice cream.
Adult admission is £14 for the castle & gardens. They also offer 25 minute seal tours on one of their clinker boats for an extra £10 per person.
We did a quick tour of the castle but spent most of our time in the garden and walking around the lake.
Adventure Always.
